What is the reason for coming together?

As Jews whose ethical heritage does not permit us to be silent in the face of Israel's continuing genocide against the Palestinian people, we are often turned off by the tacit acceptance—and often explicit support—of this genocide granted by the Jewish establishment. 

Our politics come from a deeply spiritual place. But it is our politics, inextricably linked to our deepest values, that exclude us from Jewish institutions, often forcing us to choose between integrity and Jewish community.

This leaves us feeling frustrated and disappointed. We yearn for a sense of belonging, a community we can call home. We long to be able to just talk with like-minded people. We feel isolated. We ask ourselves: How can we find a Jewish community without checking our politics and our values at the door? 

You are not alone. There are many people who feel the same way as you do. Moreover, technology is now able to bring us together. Technology has made it possible to connect with people who "get it" when it feels like no one in our immediate life has a clue.

This is why we are continuing our online reading groups to connect people who identify as Jewish (or Jew-ish) and who feel isolated because of their views about Palestine.

We are super excited to continue to build a community that is welcoming of who we are, where we all feel a sense of belonging, a community we can call home, without checking our politics and our values at the door.

JeLiThIn’s Reading Groups  

Building community through reading Jewish texts and sharing personal reflections.

JeLiThIn’s Reading Groups give people who are interested in Judaism and care deeply about Palestine the opportunity to connect and build community through reading Jewish texts and personal reflection and sharing without checking our radical politics and values at the door.

We are embarking on a project to read the entirety of the TaNaKh.📖

We have now read the Torah (Chumash), word by word, at least four times, and now we are moving beyond the weekly parshiot into the rest of TaNaKh: first the Nevi'im (Prophets), beginning with the Former Prophets (Joshua through Kings).

We remain a non-Zionist/anti-Zionist space for nonjudgmental community and connection with like-minded people. We aim to be anti-racist, anti-colonial, anti-ageist, anti-ableist, and feminist in our relationships with each other, welcoming feedback and collaboration as we continue to build our radical community together.

JeLiThIn’s Reading Groups do not presuppose any theology nor any particular knowledge about anything. Curiosity is enough to begin.

What we do

We read the text sequentially, one book at a time, in manageable weekly portions.

We meet meet via Zoom every Thursday at 12 pm and 7:00 pm Eastern Time (in English) and every Saturday at 12:00 p.m Eastern Time (in Spanish).

There is no homework other than reading the chapters from Nevi’im that we will discuss that week, and we encourage participants to feel comfortable attending even without having read beforehand because the more you show up, the more the connections deepen.

At the same time, the more you put into the program, the more you will get out of it. Therefore, I highly recommend reading the assigned chapters from Nevi’im each week before our meeting.

After each book, we dedicate a full session to sharing our writings with the group— personal reflections, poetry, questions, or creative responses to what we've read. Through sharing our beliefs, values, and needs with others, we deepen our sense of community and belonging.

Components of the program:

• Small group settings: Through a small group setting, we are able to get to know one another, receive group affirmation and validation, and build a real sense of belonging.
• Sharing and listening: Through personal sharing and attentive listening, we become aware of how others share our same challenges and values. At the same time, we feel accepted for who we really are despite our differences. Through these deepened bonds, a sense of community and belonging emerges.
• Online Community:We use an online community platform stored on a private server outside of the creepy big tech companies obsessed with controlling our speech.
• OWNN the Text: At the end of each book we will incorporate elements of the OWNN the Text method: We make the text our own through writing personal adaptations of the biblical stories, and through making the text our own, we imbue old texts with new meaning as we express and explore our own personal spirituality. Then, through sharing our personal adaptations of the biblical stories, we will get to know each other and connect deeply with one another and with our tradition.

About the facilitator:

Rabbi Lucia Pizarro was born in Mexico City, where she became qualified to practice law. She:

• is the first Mexican woman ordained as a rabbi in the Conservative movement
• completed an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Essex in the UK
• has been involved in Palestinian solidarity since 2002
• led liberation Seders in Ontario from 2009 to 2019
• kick-started IJV’s Online Chavurah in 2020
• is the Founding Spiritual Director at the Jewish Liberation Theology Institute
• is a member of Independent Jewish Voices’ Spiritual and Cultural Network
• is a member of Jewish Voice for Peace’s Rabbinical Council

 

 

Cost:

JeLiThIn's Reading Groups are available for $40 USD per month. This subscription/membership includes access to all three weekly sessions (you can attend all of them if you wish): two sessions on Thursdays in English and one session on Saturday in Spanish.

At the end of each session, I offer a brief five-minute Hebrew lesson.

In between sessions, we continue the conversation on our online community platform stored on a private server outside of the creepy big tech companies obsessed with controlling our speech.

At the end of each book, we share our responses to that book with the group— personal reflections, poetry, or any creative responses to what we've read.

Requirements and expectations:

Building a sense of community and belonging requires active effort and practice. And you need to do the work. The more you put into this community-building effort, the more you will get out of it. Which is why you will be required to commit to doing the following:

• Regular attendance.
• Engaging with the weekly readings.
• Participating actively and respectfully in discussions.
• Engaging with the community platform.
• Providing feedback and collaborating on our collective journey.

When can you join?

JeLiThIn's Reading Groups open their doors for new members at the beginning of each book of the Tanakh, allowing you to dive deep into the study of a specific book alongside an anti-Zionist Rabbi and a group of like-minded individuals and concluding with a reflective session that includes sharing our responses to the readings.

The next opening is for the Book of Joshua, starting Thursday, October 8 (y en español el sábado, 10 de octubre)—the beginning of a journey that will carry us beyond the Torah and into the Prophets!

¿Cuál es la razón para reunirnos?

Como judíos cuyo legado ético no nos permite quedarnos callados frente al genocidio Israelí contra el pueblo palestino, nos sentimos alienados por la aceptación tácita —y con frecuencia el apoyo explícito— que las instituciones judías otorgan a este genocidio.

Nuestra política nace de un lugar profundamente espiritual. Sin embargo, son precisamente nuestras convicciones políticas, inextricablemente vinculadas a nuestros valores más profundos, las que nos excluye de las instituciones judías, obligándonos a menudo a elegir entre la integridad y una comunidad judía.

Esto nos hace sentir frustrados y decepcionados. Anhelamos un sentido de pertenencia, una comunidad que podamos llamar nuestro hogar. Anhelamos poder simplemente conversar con personas que nos entienden. Nos sentimos aislados. Nos preguntamos: ¿Cómo podemos encontrar una comunidad judía donde no tengamos que dejar de lado nuestra política y nuestros valores?

No estás solo. Hay muchas personas que sienten lo mismo que tú. Además, la tecnología ahora puede juntarnos. La tecnología ha hecho posible que nos conectemos con personas que nos entienden cuando sentimos que nadie a nuestro alrededor comparte nuestras preocupaciones ni comprende nuestras convicciones.

Por eso continuamos con nuestros grupos de lectura en línea para conectar a personas que se identifican como judías (o no tanto) y que se sienten aisladas debido a sus opiniones sobre Palestina.

Estamos muy emocionados de seguir construyendo una comunidad donde podamos ser quienes somos, donde todos sintamos que pertenecemos y que tenemos un lugar al que podemos llamar hogar, sin tener que dejar de lado nuestra política y nuestros valores.

Construyendo comunidad a través de la lectura de textos judíos y el intercambio de reflexiones personales

El Grupo de Lectura de JeLiThIn ofrece a las personas interesadas en el judaísmo y que se preocupan profundamente por Palestina la oportunidad de conectar y construir comunidad a través de la lectura de textos judíos, la reflexión personal y el intercambio, sin tener que dejar nuestra política radical y nuestros valores en la puerta.

Nos estamos embarcando en un proyecto para leer todo el TaNaJ.📖

Ya hemos leído la Torá (Jumash), palabra por palabra, hoja por hoja por lo menos cuatro veces, y ahora estamos avanzando más allá de las parashiot semanales hacia el resto del TaNaJ: primero los Nevi'im (Profetas), comenzando con los Profetas Anteriores (Josué hasta Reyes).

Seguimos siendo un espacio no sionista/antisionista donde personas con ideas afines pueden construir comunidad y relacionarse sin ser juzgadas. Estamos comprometidos con construir relaciones basadas en el cuidado mutuo, el respeto y los valores compartidos, y en trabajar activamente contra el racismo, el colonialismo, el edadismo, el capacitismo y el sexismo en la forma en que nos relacionamos. Valoramos la retroalimentación y la colaboración mientras seguimos construyendo esta comunidad radical.

El Grupo de Lectura de JeLiThIn no presupone ninguna teología específica ni ningún conocimiento previo sobre nada. La curiosidad es suficiente para comenzar.

Lo que hacemos

Leemos el texto de manera secuencial, un libro a la vez, en porciones semanales manejables.

Nos reunimos por Zoom una vez a la semana, todos los sábados a las 12 pm, hora del Este (en español) y los jueves a las 12 pm y a las 7:00 pm, hora del Este (en inglés).

No hay tarea aparte de leer los capítulos de Nevi'im que discutiremos esa semana, y animamos a los participantes a sentirse cómodos asistiendo incluso sin haberlos leído de antemano, porque cuanto más nos reunimos, más se profundizan las conexiones.

Al mismo tiempo, cuanto más te involucres en el programa, más obtendrás de él. Por lo tanto, recomiendo encarecidamente leer los capítulos asignados de Nevi'im cada semana antes de nuestra reunión.
Después de cada libro, dedicamos una sesión completa a compartir nuestros escritos con el grupo: reflexiones personales, poesía, preguntas o respuestas creativas a lo que hemos leído. Al compartir nuestras creencias, valores y necesidades con otras personas, profundizamos nuestro sentido de comunidad y pertenencia.

Componentes del programa:

• Grupos pequeños: A través de grupos pequeños, podemos conocernos, recibir afirmación y validación del grupo y construir un sentido de pertenencia.
• Compartir y escuchar: Al compartir de manera personal y al escuchar con atención, nos hacemos conscientes de que otras personas comparten nuestros mismos retos y valores. Al mismo tiempo, nos sentimos aceptados tal como somos, a pesar de nuestras diferencias. Estos vínculos profundos dan lugar a un sentido de comunidad y pertenencia.
• Comunidad en línea: Utilizamos una plataforma comunitaria en línea alojada en un servidor privado, fuera de las grandes y espeluznantes empresas tecnológicas obsesionadas con controlar lo que decimos.
• Haz Tuyo el Texto: Al final de cada libro, hacemos nuestro el texto a través de adaptaciones personales de las historias bíblicas y, al hacerlo nuestro, damos nuevos significados a textos antiguos mientras expresamos y exploramos nuestra propia espiritualidad. Luego, al compartir nuestras adaptaciones personales de las historias bíblicas, nos conocemos mejor y nos conectamos profundamente unos con otros y con nuestra tradición.

Sobre la facilitadora

La rabina Lucía Pizarro nació en la Ciudad de México, donde obtuvo su licenciatura en Derecho. Ella:

• es la primera mujer mexicana ordenada como rabina en el movimiento conservador
• completó una M.A. y un Ph.D. en Filosofía en la Universidad de Essex en el Reino Unido
• ha estado involucrada en la solidaridad con Palestina desde 2002
• dirigió Séders de liberación en Ontario del 2009 al 2019
• puso en marcha la Javurá en línea de IJV en 2020
• es la Directora Espiritual Fundadora en el Instituto de Teología de Liberación Judía (JeLiThIn)
• es miembro del Consejo Rabínico de Jewish Voices for Peace (JVP)

Los Grupos de Lectura de JeLiThIn abren sus puertas a nuevos miembros al comienzo de cada libro del Tanaj, permitiéndote profundizar en el estudio de un libro específico junto a una rabina antisionista y un grupo de personas que piensan de manera similar, y concluyendo con una sesión reflexiva que incluye compartir nuestras respuestas a las lecturas.

La próxima apertura es para el Libro de Josué, comenzando el sábado 10 de octubre (y en inglés el jueves 8 de octubre), ¡el comienzo de Nevi’im!

A través de nuestro enfoque personal y reflexivo, podrás conectar profundamente con el texto y con personas que te entienden.
